Wicklow's Living Wetlands
This exhibition is composed of a selection of the wonderful entries to Wicklow’s Living Wetlands a photography competition, organised by the Heritage Office of Wicklow County Council and Birdwatch Ireland in the summer of 2013. Click on the images above for more information.
Wetlands include areas of swamp, bog, marsh, wet woodland and coastal areas and are often perceived as wastelands. The competition and exhibition is part of ongoing work of the Wicklow Heritage Forum to raise awareness of the importance of wetlands to our health and our wealth, providing us, as they do with the basic services of life, clean water, air, soil and flood abatement.
Wetlands are sanctuaries for wildlife and provide beautiful scenic venues for many of our recreational activities whether it is fishing, sailing, swimming or merely going for a walk. Many of our placenames in Wicklow have wetland origins (including Wicklow Town itself coming from the Viking for low lying meadow) showing how their importance has long been recognised and appreciated by previous generations.
In short Wetlands enrich our lives and are a part of our Wicklow Heritage that is worth cherishing and protecting. Thanks to all who entered the competition and to Eamon Doran from NPWS who helped us pick the winners. We hope that you enjoy these pictures and get a chance to view the exhibition in County Buildings 22nd August – 30th September 2013. We hope to move it to other venues in County Wicklow, so if you would like to propose a venue near you just let us know.
