About the Book

Until relatively recently, traditional farmhouses were an integral part of the Wicklow landscape. Since the 1960’s new forms of buildings have dominated the countryside. However, hidden down overgrown lanes are many fascinating examples of old farmhouses preserving a wonderful array of traditional features, from thatched roofing to furniture and fittings. These capture a way of rural life that has disappeared, but which remains vivid in our collective memory. This study is an attempt to document a record of that way of life in Wicklow before the physical evidence is lost forever.

About the publisher

Wicklow County Council is delighted to publish this book as an action of the County Wicklow Heritage Plan. The plan puts in place the framework for a series of actions which aim to increase our understanding and appreciation of the wealth of heritage in Wicklow.

In recent years, and with the support of The Heritage Council we have carried out a number of actions to find out more about our traditional buildings and to better protect them. These actions have been overseen by the Wicklow Heritage Forum and include; the commissioning of a representative inventory of traditional buildings in the county, producing a calendar and exhibition on this theme, and hosting talks, training days and demonstrations on the conservation of historic buildings. This publication very much complements our work to date and highlights the importance of traditional farmhouses as a unique feature of the cultural and natural landscape for which the county is renowned.

The author, Chris Corlett is a valued member of the Wicklow Heritage Forum, and has a limitless enthusiasm for, and knowledge of, so many aspects of our Wicklow heritage. We are indebted to Chris for generously sharing his knowledge in these pages and trust that this book will help us to see these modest and unassuming buildings in a new light and to appreciate the unique tradition that they represent.
