With September now upon us, it’s time for a reminder of the annual La Touche Festival of History, to be held this year on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 September 2023, at Greystones Golf Club.
This is the eighth Festival of History, organised by the La Touche Legacy Committee in association with the Greystones Archaeological and Historical Society, and like its predecessors features an exciting and eclectic programme which is sure to appeal to Wicklow’s many history enthusiasts. Speakers include a number of the country’s most eminent historians, and topics cover both national and local history, with Dr Brian Gurrin speaking on the early Irish census records in PROI, Professor Emeritus Michael Laffan questioning the concept of an Irish revolution, and Felix Larkin on newspaper history. Meanwhile Wicklow’s own history is addressed by Dr Emma Lyons, who will speak about the La Touche involvement in Irish horse racing, Dr Ian d’Alton, who will discuss aspects of Wicklow on the eve of the revolutionary period, and this year’s Jim Brennan Memorial lecturer, Dr Emily Mark Fitzgerald, who will offer a presentation on stereoscopic travel photography at the turn of the twentieth century, with particular reference to Wicklow. Guest speaker at the seminar dinner at Greystones Golf Club on Saturday night at 8pm will be journalist Stephen Collins.
