Annamoe Pure Mile 2014
Annamoe, is a village, in the parish of Derralossory, barony of Ballinacor. This small village is situated in a sequestered spot, where a small valley opens on the east into the beautiful and romantic vale through which the river Annamoe flows in its descent from Lough Dan. The scenery is richly diversified.
Community Action
Two information evenings were held in February and August with monthly updates on the parish newsletter.
Work on-going relating to local history, field names, townland names and other historical dates and events. A local monthly historical meeting was held with 8-10 people attending.
Researching of the flora and fauna on the mile.
Strimming of grass and litter picking occurred regularly.
Homeowners were encouraged to remove litter and maintain hedges and grass verges outside their homes.
Cleaning of overgrowth located at the stone wall stretching from the community hall gate to the main road.
Reclaimed path and removed overgrowth from brook and picnic area.
Removed decayed fence from roadside to picnic area.
Replaced stakes and railings and painted new timber fence from roadside to picnic area.
Wheelchair access was developed to the picnic area which involved the laying of a hardcore surface.
Spread soil from Goat Bridge creating a view of the brook.
Plant boxes were placed containing a variety of flowers and miniature Golden White Cedar.
Famous People
Annamoe is home to a number of notable people associated with film, music, and writing including film director John Boorman, U2 rock group manager Paul McGuinness, actor Daniel Day-Lewis and musician Paddy Moloney of The Chieftans. The writer John Millington Synge also lived there, as did former Irish president Erskine Childers, who is buried at Derrylossery Church.
