Brittas Bay Biodiversity Project Information Evening

Richard Nairn

As well as being one of Wicklow’s most popular beaches, Brittas Bay is also one of the jewels in the crown of county Wicklow’s biodiversity, being an area that is rich in plant, insect and birdlife.

The Dunes at  Brittas Bay are part of a complex of coastal habitats that includes Buckroney Dunes and which are designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC).  The biodiversity of the site suffers from amenity pressures however, and Wicklow County Council is looking at implementing a programme  of actions to facilitate improved management for biodiversity and enhance the conservation status of the site. This project is being co-ordinated by the Heritage Office of Wicklow County Council in association with Wicklow Municipal District and with funding support from National Parks & Wildlife through the National Biodiversity Action Plan Fund of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.

Initial works have commenced which focus on trialling mowing plots to inform an appropriate grazing regime. It is also intended to map the invasive sea buckthorn.

All are invited to attend a public information event on Tuesday 15th October 2019 @ 7 pm in  Wicklow Town Hall, Market Square to find out more from project  ecologist Alan Lauder, and to hear about opportunities to participate in upcoming invasive species mapping workshops. For further details or contact Deirdre Burns, Heritage Officer dburns@wicklowcoco.ie T: 0404 20100.
