Community information event on sustainable tourism possibilities in the Wicklow Mountains -23/06/22

Rathdrum Library Event on Thurs 23 June 2022

As part of a new European project ‘CUPHAT – Coastal Uplands: Heritage and Tourism’ focused on sustainable and regenerative heritage-based tourism in the coastal uplands of Ireland and Wales we are inviting individuals and community groups in and neighbouring the Blackstairs Mountains, to attend the project’s first public event, a community information evening. You are warmly invited to attend the event, which will be held in Rathdrum Library on Thursday, 23rd June 2022 at 6.30pm.

CUPHAT focuses on areas outside the reach of traditional tourism offerings with four funded study locations in the Cambrian Mountains and Preseli Hills in Wales, and the southern Wicklow Mountains and the Wexford portion of the Blackstairs Mountains in Ireland. Researchers from UCD School of Geography partnering with colleagues in Aberystwyth University and the Dyfed Archaeological Trust will work with local communities to develop tourism offerings in these areas and they would like your input to connect and co-create sustainable tourism offerings that meet the needs of the local community.

We are interested in learning about the key features of the cultural and natural heritage that you value within your community or local area, and the ways in which these features can be used to promote sustainable and regenerative forms of tourism:

  • What aspects of cultural heritage are important to your area? How could these be preserved for future generations, as well as being promoted to visitors?
  • What aspects of natural heritage are significant to your area? How can this significance be communicated to visitors?
  • How can we ensure that the kind of tourism promoted is sustainable and benefits your community?

As well as being an opportunity to celebrate the things that are important to your community, the event will provide a chance for you to learn about our project, including its goals and the other upland areas that feature as part of it.
RSVPs please by email cuphat@aber.ac.uk or completing the google form available at: https://forms.gle/y4wX8HHobuiPnHtZA

We look forward to meeting you at the event.

Yours sincerely,
Arlene & Christine
