Digital Upskilling for Heritage Enthusiasts!

Calling all Heritage Enthusiasts in County Wicklow

Do you want to learn how to use online digital tools more effectively to expand your efforts and to connect with wider audiences? If so, the Heritage Office of Wicklow County Council is delighted to announce a unique FREE online programme developed to support community heritage projects, individuals and groups in County Wicklow. This initiative is co-funded by Wicklow County Council and The Heritage Council as an action of the County Wicklow Heritage Plan. This new Seven Week programme is  facilitated by visual artist and folklorist Michael Fortune (folklore.ie)  in association with Heritage Office of Wicklow County Council.

 

To Book:

Space is limited to just 20 people so early booking is advisable. First preference will be given to members of the Our Wicklow Heritage iCAN network and to those actively involved in  community heritage  initiatives in County Wicklow  (e.g. wildilfe projects, historical societies, archaeological research etc).  Please book before the 15th of October giving your name and the heritage activity/ group  that you are involved in,  by email to:  wicklowheritage@wicklowcoco.ie .  All attendees will be sent a login and password in advance of the course commencement.

Workshops Details:

Session 1: Filming on your Mobile Phone

The first session will show you how to make use of your phone to film tutorials, workshops and blogs. It will also highlight how to utilise your phone to its fullest potential (video settings, manual focus etc) alongside the DIY tips needed to create tripods and accessories for shooting. This will cover external mics, lights and various configurations, where to purchase etc. The session will also cover how to use your mobile phone for live broadcasts and workshops using ZOOM, Facebook Live and other platforms while Michael will also chat about backing up your phone to your computer and transferring photos and videos using Snapdrop and similar free tools.

 

Session 2: Video Editing on your Mobile Phone

This session will show you how to video edit on your mobile phone and tablet using the free cross-platform App ‘InShot’. This will cover everything you need to know from editing, adding titles, adding and recording sound and sharing the completed film. InShot has revolutionised handheld editing and is an ideal entry point for anyone wishing to produce their own content. The session will cover everything needed to get you up and running and the session will also look at transferring the completed video files via We Transfer, WhatsApp, Messenger and Air/Snap Drop and compressing files using Handbrake.

 

Session 3: Broadcasting on Social Media

In this session you will be introduced to the area of Broadcasting and Sharing content online. This will focus on Facebook, You Tube and Instagram and how they are used to share content and also how they can be used with online and physical events. In this session Michael will walk you through his own social media pages and explain what works for him, what doesn’t etc. He will give an insight into posting with regard to content, narratives, tagging etc. This session will look at the LIVE element to Social Media and show how this can be used for events and posts within your practice. The session will look at Facebook/YouTube LIVE as well as using pre-recorded material using Elgato boxes and Scheduled Posts. Michael will also show you how he conducts PR for his events using a variety of tools from Facebook Events to traditional email, radio and printed media. Focus will be placed on producing posters/flyers for events using Canva and InShot.

 

Session 4: ZOOM

This session will focus entirely on the use of ZOOM for seminars, workshops, screenings etc. This will cover absolutely everything from setting up ZOOM accounts, passwords, scheduling meetings to everything you need to know when hosting one. The session will look at Waiting Rooms, Admissions, Chat, Optimised Sound, Closed Captions, Recording, Live Streaming, 2nd Camera, Pinning Posts etc. Michael was using ZOOM for over two years and since Covid has used it daily in a host of settings and multiple ways.

 

Session 5: Online Resources

For this session Michael will chat about online resources that he uses in his own practice on a daily basis from photographic and film archives to sound and music, maps, folklore and historic databases and programmes. In the workshop you will be shown how to safely download photos and videos from the internet using downloaders. This is a brilliant session and an eye-opener for many.

 

Session 6: Screen recording on your Computer/Phone

In this session Michael will introduce you to the world of Screen Recording and how it can be used in multiple ways for recording tutorials, recording online content as well using it for photographic and film projects within schools workshops and community based projects. He will walk you through the free cross-platform app Screen-cast O’Matic which is easy to use and an invaluable tool to have when producing and sharing work. He will also highlight how this can be done on mobile phones and tablets using default settings on your devices and free external apps.

 

Session 7: Animation and Time-Lapse

The final session will look at the area of stop-motion animation and time-lapse and how to use it on your mobile phone and ipad/tablet using free software called Stop Motion Studio. The session is an eye-opener for many and Michael will walk you through all you need as well as some cheap extras such as clickers, lights etc. Participants will be shown examples of 2D and 3D animations as well as loads of examples showing how Time Lapse can be used in projects from school workshops to archeological digs. This is a fun session and a great way to end the programme.
