The Heritage Office of Wicklow County Council in partnership with the Wicklow Uplands Council  invites you to send us pictures of your favourite aspects of Wicklow’s geological heritage. It might be a breath-taking view, a mountain conquered; a building, gate or stone wall forged from the local geology, a waterfall, corrie lake or glacial valley. Your image might encapsulate people working with or enjoying the aesthetics of the geological landscape. The choice is yours. Entries to the competition will form an exhibition on the geological theme ‘From Corries to Coast’ which will be launched at Blessington Library on 22nd August 2015 for National Heritage Week. The aim of this photographic competition is to acknowledge and celebrate the diversity, beauty and significance of geology in county Wicklow and the contribution it continues to make to our quality of life, our health and our wealth.

Categories:

Entries will be organised by us into the following categories. In your application you should indicate which category you think best fits your image. Please include a short caption ( up to 50 words max) which tells us about your photo.

Landscape –Whether it is a  well known landmark such as the Sugar Loaf, Powerscourt Waterfall, Glendalough Valley , or just the hill behind  your house, we all have places that are the result of geological processes and which we enjoy visiting. Submit a photo of your favourite place

People – As long as people have lived in Wicklow we have interacted with local geology, whether this is through the siting of  prehistoric monuments, the building of houses, the patterns of stone walls, the placenames and traditions associated to places  like  Lough Nahanaghan (Lake of the Sea Monster) or simply the enjoyment of a cliffwalk or sandy beach.  We would love to see your photos showing the connections between people and geology in Wicklow.

Economy / products – The underlying geology provides a range of materials that have contributed to our economic wealth from earliest times to present, from mining to quarrying to stone cutting and carving. These materials have dictated where people live and, in what kinds of houses; the construction of roads, railways and tramways; the siting of engine houses, processing plants and workshops.
