From the High Alps to the Burnaby Estate

In this illustrated talk Rosemary will tell us of the adventurous career of Elizabeth Hawkins-Whitshed(1860 – 1934) , and of her tangled private life.  Born in Killincarrick into a wealthy family she married, at 18,  Captain Burnaby (the first of her three husbands! ).  Shortly afterwards, however, she abandoned her conventional life in London society to become one of the most notable female mountaineers of the era, a pioneering photographer and film-maker, and a prolific author.  She  maintained a lifelong interest in Greystones and authorized the housing development known as the Burnaby Estate.

Rosemary Raughter  is a lecturer and researcher with interests in women’s and local history. Her publications include  “ Religious women and their history:       breaking the silence. ”  and  “The journal of Elizabeth Bennis, 1749-1779.”            She is currently working on a biography of Elizabeth Hawkins-Whitshed,  and has an essay on the Hawkins-Whitshed family of Killincarraig and Greystones in the recently published  “Greystones: its buildings and history”.
