‘If those trees could only speak’: the family history of Lord Massy, Killakee
Massy Wood, situated in the foothills of the Dublin mountains, is familiar to many people who enjoy walking; many however may not realise that once a great mansion stood there, a residence of the Massy family. Frank’s talk, enriched by some fantastic photographs, will detail the history of the family. In Ireland since 1641, in the course of time, the family acquired substantial properties, including the estate at Killakee, Rathfarnham. Unhappily, arising from the decline in family fortunes, the eight Baron Massy (Hugh Hamon) was evicted from Killakee House in 1924, and resided in the gate lodge until his death in 1958.
Frank Tracy, born in the Liberties in Dublin, graduated from University College Galway with a B.A. in Celtic Archaeology, and spent most of his working life in the Public Service. He is a keen hillwalker, and as a local historian has published many articles and books, including South Dublin Rambles (2009) and If Those Trees Could Speak (2005).
