Kilmacanogue History Society - December 2nd. Meeting

Glenview  Hotel  –  2nd  December  2014

Julian Vignoles,  a Kilmacanogue native and author of   A Delicate Wildness – the Life and Loves of David Thomson 1914-1988,  will give a presentation to the society on Thomson’s life and work.  Thomson was the author of thirteen books, the most famous being Woodbrook, published in 1974, about his ten year period living in Ireland.  It’s a history book and love story combined, and has been described as an ‘Arcadian masterpiece’.

The talk will deal with Thomson’s literary output and assess the man himself-described by Seamus Heaney as having a ‘delicate wildness’.  Julian will also tell us of the connection between Woodbrook in Roscommon and Kilmacanogue.  Thomson came to the Jameson Estate (Glencormac) in 1943 to visit Phoebe Kirkwood and her family, they having left Woodbrook.

Julian Vignoles grew up on the Little Sugarloaf, attended Kilmacanogue National School and Presentation College Bray. He graduated from UCD in 1976 and worked for Hot Press, before a long career as an RTE radio and TV producer, winning several Jacobs Awards. He was a member of the governing body of the Eurovision Song Contest from 2006 to 2010.
