Glenview Hotel – Tuesday 5th May 2015
The GPO – 200 years of history
Stephen Ferguson
The Post Office is one of the oldest institutions of the state, and transferred its headquarters from Dame street to the new purpose-built Francis Johnston designed GPO building in 1814. Stephen Ferguson, in his richly illustrated presentation, will tell us of the history of this iconic building and of the part it has played in our postal history and in the history of the very state itself.
Stephen Ferguson is Assistant Secretary of An Post and curator of the GPO museum. He has written on various aspects of Post Office history and is the author of Business as Usual – GPO staff in 1916; The Irish Post Box-Silent servant and Symbol of the State ; and in 2014 The GPO-200 years of history. Stephen visited us in 2011 to speak on the Irish Post Box and subsequently was instrumental in helping us retain our unique functioning 1868 Victorian hexagonal Penfold postbox in the Rocky Valley.
Stephen’s presentation will be delivered on time at:
8.30PM on Tuesday 5th May
The Glenview Hotel, Glen of the Downs
