Wicklow's Gold Rush

A Talk By Peadar McArdle
Peadar’s illustrated talk will describe the fabulous gold nugget finds in Wicklow which triggered the gold rush of 1795, and discuss the impact of its subsequent history on events both national and local, including the 1798 Rebellion, the influence of Parnell, the attitude of the newly independent government and the 1930 Goldmine River corruption controversy. He will consider how the district fared in the gold exploration boom of the 1980s before addressing what future its gold deposits may have.
Dr. Peadar McArdle is a professional geologist, and retired recently as Director of the Geological Society of Ireland, He has had a long-term interest in the history and origin of the Goldmine river and his book “Gold Frenzy The story of Wicklow’s gold ” will be available for purchase on the night.
