Native Woodland Trust Volunteer Day

Would you like to get outdoors and enjoy some beautiful views while helping to carry out some environmental work on our Laragh nature reserve? If so then come along to the Native Woodland Trust’s volunteer day on the 19th September from 11am to 1pm.

On this volunteer day we will be removing some gorse that has grown up around our young saplings. We will also be checking the deer exclosures and performing any maintenance that needs to be done. There is a steep walk to the site and so this is not suitable for everyone. We have lots of work to do on the site and so any help we receive would be much appreciated.

The Native Woodland Trust is an environmental charity dedicated to the protection of Ireland’s rare native and ancient woodland. The Trust achieves this by setting up woodland reserves around the country such as their reserve at Laragh in County Wicklow. This reserves network allows the Trust to protect existing woodland as well as plant new native woodland for the future. Part of the work we do involves running volunteer days for our members and the public to encourage more people to get involved in their local woodlands.

The meeting point for this event will be at 11:00 am at Trooperstown wood car park, between Laragh and Annamoe. For a map and further details please check our website www.nativewoodlandtrust.ie or the events section of our Facebook page. This event will run from 11:00am until 1:00pm and all are welcome. For more details please contact Rebecca at rebecca.doyle@nativewoodlandtrust.ie or on 087 9619083.

Editors Notes:

The Native Woodland Trust is an environmental charity dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of our native woodlands. Native woodland is a scarce habitat in Ireland and we are actively engaged in its protection through the acquisition of woodland sites and the planting of new community woodland reserves. We currently have six woodland reserves; two in Co Wicklow, one in Co Leitrim, one in Waterford, one in Westmeath, one in Meath and we are in the process of expanding our reserves network. Together with local communities and volunteers we transform these sites into native woodlands through tree and wildflower planting and careful maintenance. We always aim to plant native trees of local varieties grown from local seed in our own nurseries. To complement our woodland creation and protection activity, we engage in environmental education and awareness in aimed at increasing knowledge and appreciation of Ireland’s woodland heritage.
