Our Wicklow Heritage: Community Archaeology Day




Background
This free one day public event is organised by the Heritage Office of Wicklow County Council to reflect the growing interest in community based archaeological and heritage recording in county Wicklow. Come along to find out via a series of short presentations about various community based archaeological research projects underway, planned or completed in Wicklow and elsewhere and find out how you can get involved.
Aims
- To support existing and encourage new, community based archaeological and heritage recording initiatives
- To provide opportunities for various groups to showcase their work and to share information and experiences
- To explore opportunities and mutual challenges for the development of community based archaeology in Wicklow
Who should attend?
The event will be of benefit to those individuals and community based groups who are actively involved in researching and recording their local heritage, as well as those who are considering embarking upon such projects in the future. PURE Mile Groups, Tidy Towns Groups, members of historical societies, graveyard committees, academics, students, statutory bodies and local tourism and development agencies are also likely to have an interest in attending.

4.00 Glendalough Graveyard Trail –an optional guided tour led by Joan Kavanagh. This trail was created by local volunteers in association with the Glendalough Heritage Forum following their survey of the graveyard with John Tierney of www.historicgraves.ie
This event is one of a programme of actions of the County Wicklow Heritage Plan supported jointly by Wicklow County Council and The Heritage Council. The encouragement of community engagement with and active participation in Wicklow’s heritage is a key objective of the Heritage Plan. It is hoped that the workshop element of this event will directly inform the content of the third county heritage plan which is currently being drafted by the Wicklow Heritage Forum.
