"Poor Green Erin" A German Travel Writers' Narratives on Ireland

On Monday  the 25th  of April 2016 at 8.00 p.m in the Parish  Hall, Roundwood, Professor Eoin Bourke, Emeritus Professor National University, Galway, will talk on his book “Poor Green Erin” German Travel Writers’ Narratives on Ireland from Before the 1798 Rising to  After the Great Famine.

 The book presents the accounts of  29 German travel writers throughout their time in Ireland from the 1780’s to the 1860’s and chronicles their experiences from both  the splendor and squalor of Dublin, descriptions of the “big houses” the amount of absentee landlords,the poverty  which  existed throughout the country and a most interesting account of a visit to Derrynane, home of “The Liberator”/Daniel O Connell.

 The talk  will be most interesting and we look forward to  seeing you.

On Sunday  the 24th  of April 2016 at 12 midday in the Town Square, Newtownmountkennedy,Local Hero Robert Monteith will be remembered with  the unveiling of a monument to Captain Monteith, the raising of the flag, with  music and entertainment in the Community  Hall afterwards.  All members of the Society  are invited to this special occasion,
