Volunteer Tree Planters Needed to Create Native Woodland

Would you like to get some fresh air, get your hands dirty and help plant some trees? If so, then come along to the Native Woodland Trust volunteer day on Saturday 18th February 2017 at the NWT Laragh Woodland.

The Native Woodland Trust is an environmental charity dedicated to the protection of Ireland’s rare native and ancient woodland. The Trust achieves this by setting up woodland reserves around the country, such as the Laragh reserve. This reserves network allows the Trust to protect existing woodland as well as plant new native woodland for the future. Part of the work we do involves running educational and fun events for our members and the public to encourage more people to use their local woodlands.

We need lots of volunteers to help us continue planting a native woodland in the beautiful Wicklow mountains. Tree planting is a fun way to spend a couple of hours enjoying beautiful views. You don’t need any experience- we’ll show you what to do! There is a short, steep slope to get to the site and so this is not suitable for everyone. This event is weather dependent. We provide the tools but make sure to wear weather appropriate clothing and footwear.

Don’t forget to bring along a snack and a drink! The more the merrier so bring your friends! Please car-pool as parking is limited at the site.

The meeting point for this event will be at 11am at Trooperstown Forest car park. There is a short drive from the meeting point to the planting site. For a map and further details please check our website www.nativewoodlandtrust.ie or the events section of our Facebook page. For more details please contact Rebecca at rebecca.doyle@nativewoodlandtrust.ie or on 087 9619083.

Meeting Point: Trooperstown Forest car park (located on the R755 Road between Annamoe and Laragh, Wicklow).

Meeting Time: 11am

Finish time: Approx. 1.15pm

Editors Notes:

The Native Woodland Trust is an environmental charity dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of our native woodlands. Native woodland is a scarce habitat in Ireland and we are actively engaged in its protection through the acquisition of woodland sites and the planting of new community woodland reserves. We currently have six woodland reserves; two in Co Wicklow, one in Co Leitrim, one in Waterford, one in Westmeath, one in Meath and we are in the process of expanding our reserves network. Together with local communities and volunteers we transform these sites into native woodlands through tree planting and careful maintenance. We always aim to plant native trees of local varieties grown from local seed in our own nurseries. To complement our woodland creation and protection, we engage in environmental education and awareness aimed at increasing knowledge and appreciation of Ireland’s woodland heritage.
