Wicklow 1916 Public Collections Day

Do you have an object, photograph, document or family story relating to 1916 life in County Wicklow?  If so, register and come along to Wicklow County Council’s 1916 Public Collections Day.  This special event will take place in County Buildings, Wicklow Town on Tuesday 17th of May from 1pm to 8 pm and will offer you the opportunity to share treasured personal objects (such as letters, photographs, medals, etc.) and family stories. 

As part of the event, short interviews will be carried out with any participants who would like to share their stories and tell the background to their items. All material will be digitally copied by experts, free of charge and while you wait, and will form part of the County Wicklow 1916 Exhibition as well as the Our Wicklow Heritage online community heritage archive.

A selection of the items photographed will also appear on the Inspiring Ireland website www.inspiring-ireland.ie, part of Ireland 2016, the official programme to mark the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising.

This event is co-ordinated by Wicklow County Council as part of the County Wicklow 1916- 2016 Commemoration Programme. Staff from the County Wicklow Archives & Genealogy Service, Heritage Office and Library Service, along with a professional conservator, will be on hand for advice on the day. Local historians and representatives from historical societies will also be present to explore the impact of events in 1916 on County Wicklow. Talks relating to Wicklow & 1916 are scheduled on the hour from 2-6pm and refreshments will be provided.

Performances of traditional music and re-enactments are planned throughout the day with “Freedom : a 1916 Story”, a short film commissioned by Wicklow County Council, being shown at intervals.

The programme for the day includes, talks, music, re-enactments, displays and a short film, all are welcome!

While all items presented on the day will be recorded, pre-registration is recommended to ensure all participants are allocated enough time to tell their stories or show their items.
