Wicklow Heritage Trails Recording Project
The Wicklow Heritage Trails Recording Project is a local heritage recording project in East Wicklow (from Bray to Woodenbridge) that aims to connect the trails and their associated towns and villages through heritage recording and interpretation.
Abarta Heritage have been contracted by Wicklow County Council and Wicklow Uplands Council to compile information using local information and other sources and to generate digital ‘points of interest’. All of the gathered information will be made available on www.ourwicklowheritage.org. It is intended that this project will help to inform the future development of visitor and tourism interpretation to promote this area as part of Ireland’s Ancient East.
What happens next?
We are carrying out desk based research at the moment to identify points of interest along the walking trails from Bray Head to Woodenbridge in the east of County Wicklow. Following on from this research, we will undertake site visits and assess the points of interest along the routes. All of this information will be uploaded to an online database and this website.
We hope to meet with interested local people along the way and record stories of sites, folklore and/or traditions. We are also interested in adding historic images to the online public database so if anyone has any images, please do let us know.
We will also deliver a community training session on heritage recording and archiving where we will provide local communities with the knowledge and skills to access sources for local heritage research and on the technical aspects of conducting audio interviews and other means of gathering local information. We will also explain the online archive (omeka.net) that has been created for this project and Our Wicklow Heritage so new material can be added to it in the future.
