A New Heritage Portal For County Wicklow

Exciting times afoot!

We are looking to develop a new heritage portal for county Wicklow and are looking for new groups in Wicklow  to come on board and join the iCAN family.

At the recent plenary meeting of the Wicklow PPN, we invited education and outreach officer with the National Museum of Ireland, Lorna Elms to join us in giving a presentation on iCAN the Irish Community of Archival Networks. Community archives bring many benefits to participating individuals and groups, not least to do with recording and preserving aspects of local heritage, history and culture but are also as a wonderful stimulus for social cohesion and a generator of ‘Cultural Capital’ . Accompanying her was Pauline from Milltown Heritage group in County Galway who told us about the many initiatives that her group has been involved in as a result of participation in iCAN, including winning the National EYCH Heritage Week Award for their project of ‘Heritage Food’ in 2018.

Our Wicklow is evolving.

This online community heritage archive site for county Wicklow has been a member of iCAN for 5 years + and we now seek to evolve to be part of  a multi platform site for County Wicklow, an umbrella under which other heritage recording groups can each have their own independent websites that they manage and for which they are responsible for generating content. In return participating groups get to be part of the iCAN family, a national network of community sites, and to avail of the training, supports and the networking opportunities that this brings.

Is Your Group Interested?

We are looking for a small number of groups to work with in Wicklow this year (2019),  and invite interested groups to submit an expression of interest to us by filling in and returning the word document below.

Selected groups will be those that are currently actively recording some aspect of their local heritage, and that commit to continuing to do this and to participate as members of iCAN. Please click on the pdf below to view Lorna’s presentation and to find out more. If you are wondering whether the iCAN model is a good fit for your group please feel free to contact either Deirdre Burns or Catherine Wright at T: 0404 20100 to discuss or drop us an e mail to dburns@wicklowcoco.ie / cwright@wicklowcoco.ie
