The Sunflower and the Bee : Age 7-8 Category winner

The Sunflower and the Bee children’s short story competition is a follow on to Cllr. Jodie Neary’s Bee Route Project for National Biodiversity Week 2020. Children were  invited  to submit their stories and these are announced here as  a Heritage Project during Heritage Week .

Hello everyone my name is Bumbles the Bee and I am bursting with excitement to tell you all about an amazing new route where I live. Before this, I was feeling very sad because lots of my bee friends have been disappearing lately.

Last month I was buzzing up the road in Delgany Wood, when I spotted a beautiful new meadow of wild flowers, full of my favourite coloured flowers…blue, yellow, white and purple! I filled my belly with sweet nectar and headed back to the hive, waving down to my friends at the Priory Bug Hotel in Delgany Wood. My bee friends were excited to start their job of making the honey.

Last week I was happily flying over The Burnaby, when I suddenly found a bee’s dream garden! A corner of long green grass with lots of yummy clover and a meadow of wild flowers with dandelions which I love! There was even a fantastic bee hotel! The people are being kind to snails, as they have used smashed up eggshells, instead of using harmful pesticides. My favourite flowers such as Dahlias, Snapdragons, Lavender, Geraniums and Roses looked so beautiful. But my absolute favourite flower, on the back walk of the garden, was a shinning bright yellow sunflower, the exact same colours as me!! Sophie the sunflower is now my best friend and I visit her every day. I have explained to Sophie about my important job of taking the pollen from flower to flower.

Along my route home, I was thrilled to see all the sunflowers planted by the children. My bee family are so delighted to hear that children are being so kind and thoughtful to us and helping us to survive. It is so important to always remember to BEE kind
