Wedding photograph of Michael and Brigid Giffney (nee Reilly) 2nd June 1919.
Michael’s family is from Ashford, Co. Wicklow. He fought in the G.P.O. during Easter 1916 with F Company 2nd Battalion. Some of his duties included guarding prisoners and dispersing looters. He was later injured by a ricochet bullet on Moore Street on the Friday or Saturday after the G.P.O. was evacuated. He was shortly captured and treated for his injuries and later interned at Kilmainham Jail before being sent to both Wakefield and Frongoch prisons in England and Wales.
After three months of internment he was released and worked as a carpenter for the Walpole family at Mount Usher Gardens in Ashford, Co. Wicklow. Subsequently he went to work directly for the Franciscans in Merchants Quay, Dublin for 11 years making the seats and designing (he used the words ‘striking out’) confession boxes. He is buried in Rathnew Cemetery.
