Greystones Archaeological & Historical Society Journal, vol 7

The seventh volume of the Greystones Archaeological & Historical Society Journal, just available, takes the form of an anthology of the area, in words and images, from the late 18th to the mid-20th century. The pieces included are drawn from sources such as memoir, travel-writing, newspaper reports and witness statements. The topics range from a 1798 murder case through a description of the 1867 Brandy Hole railway accident to an account of Eamon de Valera’s arrest in Greystones in 1918, and the characters who appear in these pages include the charitable and energetic Elizabeth La Touche, ‘the heroes of Greystones’, John, William and Herbert Doyle, and the playwright, John Millington Synge, who spent many of his childhood summers in the area.

Copies available at Leo Ireton’s shop, 2 Killincarrig Road, Greystones, cost 7 euro. For further details on the Society’s activities, see http://www.greystonesahs.org/gahs/index.php/home
