Greystones Archaeological & Historical Society
Greystones Archaeological & Historical Society is delighted to announce the publication of the latest issue of its Journal – the ninth in the Society’s thirty years of existence. Edited by Frank Deignan, this collection draws together a variety of articles, covering aspects both of local Greystones and of wider history and heritage, and reflects several of the Society’s recent involvements.
The opening essay, Dr Martin Mansergh’s ‘Creating a new State’, surveys the emergence of national identity and the development of the new state through the prism of La Touche and Mansergh family history, and is the text of Dr Mansergh’s address to last year’s conference dinner of the La Touche Legacy/GAHS Festival of History. The history of our own county is represented by the extract, on Bronze Age burials, from Dr Eoin Grogan and Dr Tom Hillery’s Guide to the Archaeology of Co Wicklow, while a figure peripherally involved in Greystones’s past is remembered in James Scannell’s account of the death of Victorian adventurer and soldier, Fred Burnaby. Liz Goldthorpe, meanwhile, offers an introduction to Averil Deverell, longtime Greystones resident and, as one of the first woman to be called to the Bar in either Ireland or the UK, a pioneering figure in Irish legal history.
Our own members’ research interests are reflected in Canon Robert Jennings’s ‘County Wicklow’s ‘hidden’ Heritage Park’, in Colin Short’s essay on Wicklow’s industrial history, and in Rosemary Raughter’s analysis of Wicklow’s Unionist women, their opposition to Home Rule and their response to the Ulster Declaration of 1912. Finally, ‘To Clon and back’ is an account of the Society’s four-day trip to West Cork in April 2018.
As anybody reading this will already be aware, publishing a local history journal is an expensive as well as an onerous undertaking. However, we were very fortunate this year in obtaining funding for the project from Wicklow County Council under the Creative Wicklow Grant Scheme 2018, and we are extremely grateful for this assistance.
The Journal will be officially launched on the opening night of the 2018 La Touche Legacy weekend, 21 September, at Greystones Golf Club, but advance copies (cost 8 euro) are available now, and can be ordered from Rosemary (087-2729874) or Joan (086-3061855), or you can make contact with the Society through our website www.greystonesahs.org
