Homeward Trek:Coollattin to Canada and Back

Newspaper article written by Brendan Lawrence
Lawrence descendants visit the ruins of John and Martha's 1848 stone cottage.
Return to roots. 4 x great grandson walks the Lawrence lane 168 years later.

Thanks to Kevin Lee, the Homeward Trek Committee and the wonderful people of Wicklow, my grandson and I enjoyed a fantastic week, August 20-27, 2016.  Descendants of the Fitzwiliam Coollattin Estate tenants evacuated to Canada returned ‘home’.  The Trek was well organized and included tours of many historical sites.  Lawrence descendants retraced the steps taken by John and Martha Lawrence and their nine children 168 years ago when they left their stone cottage in Moyne for New Ross to board the Jessie, and the voyage to a new life in Canada.

  • I too am a descendant of John and Martha Lawrence, through their son Henry. Thank you so much for sharing this article, and allowing me the chance to see the homestead where my Great Great Great Grandparents resided before making the trek to Canada. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to travel there as well, to see the homestead in person, and hopefully learn more about my ancestors.
