Thank you for running the Together Apart project. I just wanted to let you know about the Avoca Creative Writers and how we have been coping throughout this time of social distancing.
Normally, every second Thursday morning, we congregate as a slightly noisy bunch in the glorious setting of The Meetings, at The Meeting of the Waters, just outside Avoca. We have between eight and fourteen at each session, some local to the area, some travelling from Wexford and Dublin. We are a very informal group, of mixed experience and confidence in writing, and most sessions involve simple creative writing exercises. When Covid-19 arrived, not meeting was never an option – we all look forward to our sessions together too much. We watched our children and grandchildren adapt to online schooling, and we decided we could do the same.
So Avoca Writers moved to Zoom. It is not the same – we miss the coffee and delicious croissants from The Meetings. But, to our collective surprise, it works very well. We can meet every week now because nobody needs to travel, and everybody has time. It has become one of the highlights of the week for many of us – supportive socially and creatively rewarding. We’ll be glad to be back in The Meetings when the time comes, but for now we can at least see each other and write.
We have a Facebook page @avocawriters. If anybody would like more information about the group, or would like to join us on Zoom, please get in touch by email.
Many thanks,
