Genealogical Query

I am researching my husband’s side of the family and was told that James Murphy, believed to be born in Dublin, was a travelling showman. I know he and his wife Mary, known as May, were in Cashel in November 1912 as that is where my father-in-law William John Murphy was born.  I was told they also lived in Wicklow so was hoping for any information that may be available. They emigrated to Australia in 1925.

  • Hi Christine,

I checked our County Wicklow parish records but I could not see any reference to this family.  Can you tell me roughly when James and Julia married, or when their children were born….

  • Thank you Catherine, I will check the census record for 1911. We have William’s birth certificate so I know Mary’s maiden name was Blake, but am unable to find any marriage record, we were told they were married in Liverpool England in 1905 but can find no record.

  • Hello Diane, Have you checked the 1911 Census for your ancestors? Please see more information on the census in our genealogy articles section. Also, if you check the article on civil records, you can find out about sourcing the birth certificate of William John Murphy, thus identifying Mary/May’s maiden name, which should help you to locate their marriage record, etc. You might find the article on the family history case study of use too. Best of luck with your research!
