Behind the Beach Biodiversity at Brittas Bay 2023

Wicklow County Council is delighted to continue our biodiversity awareness programme at Brittas Bay for the Summer / Autumn season. This series of free outdoor public workshops and activities aims to increase awareness and appreciation of the rich ecology of coastal habitats and species that lie behind our popular beaches, and to highlight the vital role that healthy dune systems play in creating a more climate resilient environment.

Upcoming events: 

  • ‘Dynamic Dunes’ ecology workshop Sat 16th Sept 11am-1.00pm Meet at North Beach Car park
  • Bird Migration workshop 30th Sept. 8-11 am led by Alan Lauder  ecologist. Meet at North Beach Car Park

These events are part of a biodiversity programme co-ordinated byWicklow County Council and supported by the National Biodiversity Action Plan fund through the Department of Housing, Heritage and Local Government. Further planned events:

  • Big Dune Community Clean Up – October – for swimmers, surfers, local residents and all beach visitors this clean-up is an opportunity to show your appreciation and to give something back. Details to be announced
  • Sea Buckthorn (invasive species) removal volunteer days are also planned over the period Nov – Feb details to be announced.
