Preban Graveyard - Learning through our heritage

In 2010 a small group of local neighbours from Preban came together and set up a committee with the sole aim of cleaning away the overgrowth of vegetation and generally to make the area more accessible to anybody who wanted to or who had to visit the graveyard.

What started off as a small project has become a much bigger project made possible by the efforts of so many people who have been bitten by the beauty, heritage and history of the graveyard.

This booklet is our attempt to preserve by record what we have uncovered so far and hope that it will highlight the unique reservoir of information that Preban graveyard holds. This booklet contains the inscriptions of 144 graves and names of 327 people who are buried at Preban along with a map of each grave. It also contains further layers of information which we have gleaned from this open-air museum and art gallery that is Preban Graveyard.

Copies are available from Byrnes Londis, Aughrim and the Farm Shop Tinahely for €10 or by phoning Jack Lynch (087 9417642) or Yvonne (087 2111153) to order a copy.

This publication is produced by the Preban Graveyard Committee in association with the Heritage Office of Wicklow County Council. We gratefully acknowledge funding from Leader, the Heritage Council and Wicklow County Council for this publication and to our ongoing work to reveal the hidden heritage of Preban graveyard over the years.
