'"This dread illness": the impact of the 1918-19 influenza epidemic in Co Wicklow' - Wicklow Town Library 16th November 2023 @ 7pm

All are invited to attend an upcoming talk with one of the county’s finest historian Rosemary Raughter entitled ‘”This dread illness”: the impact of the 1918-19 influenza epidemic in Co Wicklow’

Having emerged first as a ‘summer scourge’ in June 1918, with two further peaks in autumn 1918 and spring 1919, the Spanish Flu  left behind a death toll of approximately 20,000 in Ireland as a whole, with Wicklow one of the counties most severely affected. While the impact on various parts of the county varied from time to time, no neighbourhood remained untouched, and local and national newspapers, as well as official death records and family lore, offer a vivid picture of the events of that traumatic period.

This talk will take place at Wicklow Town Library Thursday, November 16th @ 7 p.m.
