Greystones Archaeological & Historical Society

The next meeting of Greystones Archaeological and Historical Society will take place at 8.30pm on Thursday, 22 January 2015 in Holy Rosary Family Centre, Greystones. The speaker will be Wicklow archaeologist Yvonne Whitty, who will introduce the documentary, The story of Preban Graveyard.. Located between Aughrim and Tinahely and recently restored by a local committee, Preban graveyard contains prehistoric carvings as well as a wealth of 18thc gravestones, together with reminders of the events of 1798 in South Wicklow, and of a later, but less well-known, local tragedy. The documentary details the process of restoration and the discovery of information on the hidden heritage of the locality, as well as providing a template for local groups contemplating similar projects in their own areas.
