Seán J. Murphy MA
Seán J. Murphy will talk on the closely intertwined Wicklow families of Barton and Childers. In particular, the talk will deal with the careers of Robert Barton (1881-1975) and Erskine Childers (1870-1922), their contribution to the national cause, and their spouses Molly Osgood and Rachel Warren of Boston.
Seán is a genealogist, historical researcher, lecturer, consultant and author. He has undertaken projects for, among others, the Irish Manuscripts Commission, and the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, and has contributed to radio and television programmes on such topics as Irish surnames, Molly Malone, theft of the Irish Crown Jewels. He has published numerous articles on his specialities in leading journals. He published Twilight of the Chiefs: the Mac Carthy Mór hoax in 2004, and in 2013, a compact biography to mark the tercentenary of the birth of the patriot Charles Lucas (1713-1771). He was a part-time genealogy teacher in UCD’s Adult Education programme from 1989 until retirement in 2017, and currently gives genealogy courses as part of the educational program of the National Library of Ireland.
